Te Anau to Queenstown

Wednesday 12th January 2011

Drive to Queenstown was under dull skies until we reached Queenstown when the sun came out; however the wind was at 40 knots from the south and the temperature was about 14deg’C.  Our first impressions of Queenstown was of an over-blown tourist town set by a beautiful lake and surrounded by craggy mountain ranges.  The town started out as a ski resort and has clearly run out of control along the borders of the lake.  Endless lego-blocks of apartments scar the hillsides and its not very attractive.  It reminds me of 1960s Britain with a higher standard of building design.  Also the town is heaving with visitors despite the fact that most of the holiday apartments appear to be empty.

Two lovely trips on a perfect sunny day. with no wind.

Firstly four hours viewing the locations used for Lord of the Rings films.  Small group of us with a guide driving a 4-wheel-drive bus over very rough roads and through fords composed of very sharp stones.  We visited Glenorchy a very small township to collect our lunch and then off into the wilds.  I’ll leave the photos to speak for themselves.  Stunning.

Secondly an afternoon trip on the lake via steamer, very pretty once we had left the town behind us.

The pictures taken this morning will appear under a “LotR” prefix over the next few days along with the DS and RtMS pictures.  I will not even try to give the pictures titles the content is all.
