I learnt how to do the rubix on this two day trip, thought to myself and smurf by our buddy from the gibbon experience Gareth from Cheltenham. Took hours and hours. The slow boat is chilled and bordering on the line of boring as two days of seeing the same scenery is a bit much, hopefully that doesn't sound arrogant. It's safe too in comparison to taking the speed boat up or down the river to get between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang which takes 6 hours. In the speed boats you have to wear crash helmets and it's reportedly the most dangerous thing you can do in Laos. Some reports from fellow travelers confirmed this from their experience. There are serious currents, vortices and big chunks of floating timber and rocks rising from the bed to dodge around along the way. The night of the first day we docked at a village called Pak Beng which solely caters for the occasion of a stopover while floating down the river.
