What I did
Such was the case on our last night in San Ignacio. It was Alex's birthday and we were determined to have a good time. After some merry-making at our hotel the 5 of us - Megan from London, and Alex and Meagan from Canada - headed into town to find any remaining nightlife. But alas! Being Monday night all the usual haunts were closed. Even the ever-popular, ever-pumping dance-hall venue. With no revellers to feed the late-night barbecue stands were closed too! (Gotta love any place where you can buy freshly braaied chicken on the bone at 2am!)
Oh well, we'll just walk the girls home then, we thought
After struggling to find the entrance, there it was under a sign that read: "Fiesta Privado". As we peeked longingly through the railings and asked to enter, a lady replied: "Sorry, it's a private party." Mario's reply: "That's ok, we don't mind!". So... she let us in! Was it his casual assertiveness or the 4 chicas in his company that allowed this to happen? I guess we'll never know. But who cares? The end result was the same!
We shaked it like a polaroid picture and were soon surrounded by curious locals. There were only about 15 people there but yet there was a guy who recognised Megan from a restaurant.
It was hard to establish to the actual purpose of the party. Something about a meeting earlier that day and the upcoming elections. Initial whispers and pointing to the alleged mayor of the town were poo-poo-ed by us. "Yeah, right! He's way too young!" He was, in fact, 33, and running for his 3rd term in office.
We gatecrashed the mayor of San Ignacio's party!
We really liked the feel of this town. Its relatively friends with locals and travellers mixing easily. We bumped into Pei Sun (Taiwan), Paul and Flo (Germany) whom we met on the sailing trip, as well as two crazy London birds, Megan and Charli whom we've met before in Isla Holbox and again in Tulum. Who's stalking whom? We also made a few new friends - Meagan & Alex (Canada), Julia and Carla (London) - whom we're bound to run into again and again!
Thanks Jonathan and Annie for the Belize tips. The best being the advice to board the back of the bus, not only do you just the queue but you can also keep an eye on your luggage. And if you don't find a seat just sit on the luggage.
