In a last ditch attempt to experience Carnaval Mexico (and stall leaving the country!), Dee embarked on a quick solo mission back north to Playa. But alas, nothing much carnaval-related was happening until after dark!

What's a girl to do?! Indulge in the western offerings of a commercial US-Mex beach town, of course! A deeleecious salad with an awesome curry dressing (on the side!) at a dedicated salad bar. A Kranky McFlurry from McDonald's for dessert. Clothes shopping at Walmart. *blush* That's my fix until Costa Rica.

The beach was pretty except for the masses of tourists, hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs, and countless massage tables. Clever thinking to have the main street run parallel to it, catering to all our tourist tat requirements!

Finally the evening's festivities started. It was more of a school concert with colourful kids being herded onto stage, sometimes facing the wrong direction and often out of step. So cute! But some kids were rather scantily clad in typical carnival garb - feather boas, boob tubes, hot pants - shaking what their mamas gave them... not too long ago! Every kid in town had their 15 minutes on stage accompanied by all the Latino club classics we've come to recognise.

It's not until Shrove Tuesday that the Carnaval parade and real hardcore adult celebrations happens. One last day of indulgence in food, alcohol and sexiness before Lent starts. We'll miss this fiesta but we've had so many in Mexico already. Besides, Brazil is the place best known for carnaval.

Our time in Mexico has drawn to a natural close. The time has come to cry and leave this beloved country...
