The prospect of spending our 9th "Commitment Celebration" anniversary in Mazatlan was not very appealing.
Few people had anything positive to say so our expectations were low. Its hey-day was apparently in the 80's. Her natural beauty is still very much evident but many streets and buildings are delapidated. Mazatlan also has a bad rep for drug cartel-related activities that has scared away visitors who flock further south instead. But many members of the North American silver-haired brigade remain. Local gringo newspapers echo their presence with articles and ads that concern the aged. Anyone need a hip replaced?
We chose to stay in Old Mazatlan that has a much more Mexican feel to it, and less of the bad bits associated with the cit
Aside - In Mexico busking guitarists/vocalists and mariachis abound. They proposition us any time of the day and just about everywhere. Normally we'd politely decline with a "no gracias" or avoid eye contact while edging away from the situation. At breakfast that day I held my head in my hands and said to the would-be-busker: "Es muy temprano para mi. Quizás mas tarde." (It's too early for me. Maybe later.). It worked a charm!
Aside from the aside - Although people are always trying to sell their wares or services to tourists on the streets/beaches, at least they're not begging. That's one of the many great things about Mexico! We've only come across begging a handful of times at most.
We took a bus ride to the other side of town and walked back along the promenade
Part of the reason we ended up spending a few days in Maz was to find the imigration office and have our visas extended. Once there we realised that we were given 6 months all along, not 3 as we originally thought. Not quite sure why 3 months was stuck in our heads. Silly us never even bothered to confirm our suspicions. Doh!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this town. Its dated look has a certain charm. It may never regain its heyday but hopefully finds a new niche to keep it going.
