Our day trip from San Pedro to Chichi market just so happened to coincide with Guatemala's Independence Day celebrations. Terrible in terms of traffic but great to see everyone dressed in their traditional best. Plus almost every Mayan village along the way seemed to be having a parade, some even along the motorway?! It's often a challenge to take photos of locals because most refuse when you ask or they expect a tip. But when it's a parade, they're on show so it's a free for all!

It was a fun and colourful day, everyone seemed to be in good spirits. At one point traffic came to a total standstill. We were stuck behind a parade in one village and since there are no other roads, we simply had to wait. That means photo time!

Chichi market itself was underwhelming. It is supposed to be the largest outdoor indigenous craft market in Central America attracting buyers and sellers from near and far. But we suspect that most sellers were celebrating their independence from Spain in their hometowns that day. So we explored the town, bought a couple of t-shirts and sought solace at an authentic little Guate bar. It consisted of one small unpainted room that reeked of mould, had scantily-clad women on the walls, an open-top toilet and a jukebox-cum-game machine. Clearly lots of sorrows have been drowned here before!
