...on Route 66!
Before leaving Vegas the Lees finally acknowledged the need for a tent. This was a bigger decision than you would imagine, as it involved adding at least 3kg to our luggage. That's a lot more to carry and to squeeze into our 40 litre bags. We'd been doing well thusfar. Getting a sleeping bag was a whole other debate that we weren't ready to have yet!
That night we arrived in Williams, a tiny town that we used as our base to explore the Grand Canyon. It unashamedly milks the fact that it's on Route 66. Just about everything makes reference to it's location - restaurants, bars, cafes, street signs, souvenirs, gas stations - everything! So when in Route 66... They even have a free nightly shoot-out in the street, on old Route 66, of course! It was as cheesey as Monterey, but the tourists loved it! I guess we got what we paid for.
It was already dark when we pitched our tents in the headlights. It was a great little campsite, part of a chain called KOA. Free wi-fi throughout the place, a movie projected onto an outdoor big screen at night, a well-stocked shop and cafe, and a braai at each campsite, and some have power outlets. Now that's what I call roughing it!
