I am happy (and alive!) to report that Death Valley didn't live up to its name. Thanks to the invention of air-conditioning! The road leading in from the west was long and straight, yet hilly like a mild rollercoaster. That's what kept us awake. Olivier drove, Mario-Mario was our GPS and I played Dee-jay.
Once we hit the hills we were amazed that they were ablaze with crazy colours. We hurried out to the highlights to snap a few pics then dashed back to the comfort of the car. Our blood was boiling, almost literally. It was the worst possible season to visit Death Valley. Visit a desert in the heart of summer? What were we thinking? The average minimum in August is 46 deg C and maximum 57. We needed to be careful not to overheat car by overusing the aircon. Good thing Olivier diligently checked the car's water level before we headed off.
The heat in the desert was unbearable. We felt like melting blobs, clearly not functioning properly and doing all sorts of loony things. Perhaps that explains Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner's loony antics? (Thanks, Michelle L, for reminding me of their connection to Death Valley ;) Somehow I rubbed sweat into my eyes and that made them burned like hell for hours. That made sightseeing, in fact, seeing at all pretty darn painful. And Mario decided to scratch the word "Soutie" in the dried up salt lake called Badwater. He was then nastily surprised that a blister formed at the tip of this pointer finger. For the next few days we were submitted to sympathy pleas as he stuck his finger in our faces, all he got was mocking!

Did you know? There is actually a fish that lives in the desert! It's an endangered species, the tiny pupfish that lives in isolated springs. We're talking water that is 90 degrees F and 5 x as salty as sea water.
