Lone Pine is a small town just before the turn-off to Death Valley. Apparently it's a famous location where westerns were shot (no pun intended) and it has a real saloon with swinging doors and real cowboys! Yeehaw!
We happened upon a newly opened hostel that only had single-sex dorm rooms. That's how I met and got to know Karen from San Jose. She had been hiking part of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT - a trek through the national parks that extends from Mexico to Canada !) to update part of the guidebook.

That night we feasted on burgers at the local diner (as you do)  and the next morning we did as the locals and had a huge breakfast at Alabama Hills - Mario had steak, eggs and fries while Dee feasted on huge slices of french toast coated in icing sugar with a blob of butter, with 2 eggs and 2 bacon strips. Olivier just shook his head, somewhat taken aback by all this. Breakfast in France normally means cafe au lait and pan au chocolate. Hmmm, chocolate for breakfast!
