Or is it shuffling? With my dodgy ankle I wouldn't be doing too much of either.

We needed a new strategy to attack this monster of a city called LA. Being such a huge, spread-out city we decided to find a second base from which to operate and explore. Getting to our new hostel was a doddle and indeed... free! That's thanks to the free airport shuttle from Backpacker's Paradise and likewise from the airport to Orbit hostel. Not bad going considering it's more than an hour journey in terrible traffic.

But Orbit was worth it...

It's a really cool hostel right on Melrose Ave and within walking distance (albeit 20+ minutes) to more familiar roads such as Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard. If you wondered where the party's at, it's here. There was something happening every night - free bbq, free beers, free supper, free live performances, free live comedy (it was more cringey than funny but I guess we got what we paid for!).

Often they'd combine the parties of the 3 hostels in the group - Orbit and 2 x Banana Bungalows (Hollywood and West Hollywood). That's how we met lovely Lucie and Micka from Brittany, France.

It was Lucie's cool dreadlocks that first caught our attention (secret - I'm mustering the courage to have some done). So when we saw them later at the hostel party, I just HAD to chat to them! :-D Very glad that we did cos they're cool buddies with a great sense of fun. While we indulged in free food and beer, they educated us about making and maintaining dreads and gave us some insight into their passion, capoeira. We got on so well that we spent most of the rest of our time in LA - freak-spotting at Venice beach, live music at the huge Farmer's market and a day trip to Universal studios, and more free food and beers :)

We had loads of good laughs together but the one that takes the gateau is when I challenged Micka to a game of pool. He claimed not to be very good and I jokingly accused him of being a hustler. He didn't seem to recognise the word so I checked if he knew what "hustle" is? I cracked up when we both realised that he thought I was calling him an @sshole. LMAO! Hilarious! The language and accent fun continued and after some elocution lessons they were saying their "free's" and "three's" with perfect South African accents! LOL!
We hope to meet up again somewhere in the world. They threaten that it'll be Latin America just so they can laugh at us saying embarrassing things in Spanish to the locals. Sweet retribution! hehe

Before leaving LA we had one more mission to complete, one that we had no choice but to accept: Buy a new netbook. Lappie had served us well (kinda!) but after his near-death experience in Queenstown and consequent resurrection, he finally breathed his final breath in Hollywood. Must've been all the glitz and glamour! Introducing Lapino, Lappie's Latino descendent.
While at Best Buy we met Walter and Vee who had a similar mission. Vee was off to India the following day and also needed a laptop. Mario gave the pitch for a netbook versus a laptop, explained why they needn't spend money on buying antivirus software and the other add-ons the salesman was pushing. It was such a positive experience for all of us that Walter said we should definitely let him know when we're next in town...
