We'd ventured through the Marlborough Sounds before on our way down south, you may recall from this blog entry:

But this time we ventured into a different part and we're so glad we did. Wow! In fact, I now consider French Pass Road my new favourite NZ road :). It leads from the mainland along the French Pass sound to the ferry point connecting to D'urville Island, the largest island of the sounds. It's definitely the road less travelled probably because it is mostly gravel, and actually bordering on jeep track territory. Mr T took it in his stride. This road takes you along the ridge of this sound sometimes giving you views of the east coast and sometimes the west. Suicidal cows and sheep were just chilling on the steep slopes.

Exploring down a steep 15 minute track leading to a secluded little beach I couldn't be bothered to put my socks and shoes on and you may recall that I forgot my flipflops in Auckland. SOMEONE said, "Oh, you don't need shoes! Have you gone soft?" Of course I hadn't gone soft and I was determined to prove it. So I went down the hill barefoot! Eish! We're talking rocks, mud, sticks, all sorts on the path. Well, that's the last time I listen to SOMEONE! ;-p It felt sweet nursing my poor piggies in the cool water and walking on the warm sand. But the return journey was yet to come. They say necessity is the mother of invention, so I invented seaweed shoes by working the strands around the back of my ankles and between my toes. New season espadrilles. I wasn't a happy camper at all but I was very pleased with my new shoes!

We also stopped at one lookout spot to bask in the last sunrays of the day and there they were... in the bay... dolphins just playing and spraying! Gotta love this place!
