After a 6:20am start, we're finally on the ferry headed over to the South Island. Every person, brochure and guidebook has been telling us how amazing it is. The best is yet to come, they say. Lets hope there wasn't too much build-up. By now we expect it to glisten like gold. In fact apparently there are places you can go panning, so just maybe we'll strike gold!
(later that day)
Even though we arrived on a very overcast day the Marlborough Sounds were still very impressive as we cruised along Queen Charlotte drive. We'd never seen "sounds" before but it's kinda like ridges of mountains with lakes/bays between them. We'll be back to explore them more thoroughly once we've work our way anti-clockwise around the island. The northern part of the South Island is approximately at the same latitude as the southern part of the North Island, so we have yet to get to the colder climes.
We chose a campsite with hot showers so we could feel human again! Living on the road means that it is inevitable that accept a lower general standard of hygiene. It's surprising how easily we have become used to showering less often than once per day. But it's hard to deny the pleasure of being freshly showered, exfoliated, shaved and Bio-oiled then crawling into our silk sleeping bag liners - one of the few luxury items we allowed ourselves.
