We opt for the quickest rather than the most scenic route. It's already a long drive for the children. It's actually fairly scenic, although the view doesn't change much for most of the journey. The vast majority of the drive is just dead straight.
We think the drive was about 5 hours, but we stop for breakfast, a quick clothes shop at an outlet centre and lunch in the van too. We leave Palm Springs at 8am and arrive in Las Vegas at 4pm. The children are amazing and both on super form today. No grumbles, just lots of giggles. Someone is looking out for us today. Rich and Emma share the driving and entertainment duties and the journey passes pretty swiftly.
We are staying at Sam's Town RV Park about 15 minute shuttle from Las Vegas Strip, we booked it since it looked like a fairly decent location and it was cheap. On closer inspection its actually really good. A huge hotel complex, swimming pool, restaurants, bars, casinos and slots, a waterfall with moving animals, 15 screen cinema, and probably more that we have yet to find.
We check into our parking slot, then head out to explore. 111 degrees here today. It is so hot you feel like you are melting. Carrying a hot child only adds to it. We eat dinner out for the first time in ages. The adults could definitely have shared a meal because the portions were huge. Googled the temperature for today and found this:
Excessive Heat Warning in Nevada
Active for next 1 day, 23 hours
Locations: Lake Mead National Recreation Area; Las Vegas Valley; Northeast Clark County; Southern Clark County; Western Clark and Southern Nye County
The article says that Las Vegas is expected to hit 114 in the next few days
Rich and Dylan play on the children's arcade games for their evening adventure - cars, motorbikes, basketball hoops, roll the ball game, toy grabbers and punch the duck. Much fun was had.
After bedtimes we sit outside. It's 9pm and still 104 degrees. Wow! We can't wait to go inside the van to cool off a little. Wouldn't mind so much if we were tanning whilst sweating.
Not exactly living it up in Vegas, but very much looking forward to seeing what it's all about tomorrow.
As Saturday is just starting in the UK our thoughts and love are very much with the lovely Standings and all of our friends running 10km to raise money for CRY (cardiac risk in the young) in memory of our fabulous and much missed friend Phil. We are so sorry not to be there, but we are with you in spirit.
