We fondly waved goodbye to Hobart and set off for the airport.
The flight was just under two hours. Dylan is pretty used to the flying patter now. He jumped up onto his window seat, looked out as we left the "runaway", then grabbed a pillow, popped his thumb in and slept until landing. Surprised, but pleased, parents.
Fabulous views of the city as we are coming in to land. Excited to return to Sydney. Getting to our hostel was an absolute mission in itself. We tried to save a few dollars by getting the train. Wow, are the bags plus the kids heavy! Dylan was especially excited to get on his first double decker train and wanted to tell everyone on the train that he'd never been on a double decker train before
We are staying at the Sydney Harbour YHA at The Rocks. This is literally sitting over the top of the 'The Big Dig'. This is a parcel of land containing remains from the late 18th century, the time of Australia’s first European settlement. Excavations began in 1994, attracting enormous media and public attention. Some 400 volunteers and a team of 20 archaeologists took part in what was popularly known as ’The Big Dig’. They uncovered the foundations of over 30 homes and shops, the earliest built in around 1795, and some 750,000 artefacts. These have provided a rare insight into early urban life in Sydney. Sydney Harbour YHA and The Big Dig Archaeology Education Centre is the largest archaeological urban development ever completed in Australia.
The location of the hostel is incredible, and the deck has phenomenal views of the bridge and the opera house.
Not much time to explore this afternoon. A quick unpack, whizz through the market to see the Bridge and The Opera House then back up the steps for Taya's bedtime. Dylan and Rich share a pizza at the local pub, sat on the seats on the pavement outside, while we chat to the locals and watch the world go by.
It's Ozzie Mother's Day tomorrow so off for a quick shop and back to take over duties as Emma is off out with her cousin Rich and his FiancÚ Lucy this evening. The Mother's Day gift is no surprise as Dylan proudly tells mummy what we got her when he sees her!
Emma back from an amazing evening out, what a treat! Drinks on the 36th floor of the Shangri-La Hotel and then dinner at an incredible teppanyaki restaurant, one of the nicest meals Emma has ever had. Seafood, beef and wine Japanese style - lucky girl!
Looking forward to exploring this great city again tomorrow.
