Our departure from Vienna was problematic. We had an 8AM train to Slovenia from one of the central Vienna train stations. The local train stop by our apartment was only four stops away to the central one.... so no problem. At 7AM we walk the 5 minutes to our local train station rolling our lives in our 5 (very heavy) suitcases and 5 (heavy) backpacks only to have people running out of the train station when we got there.... not a good sign. I guess the rough translation that we got in German is that there was an explosion in the train station. DOH! So Plan B. We hall all of our bags to the nearest tram stop (of course it is uphill) and catch the next tram to another train station. There is also a heat wave going so we are all sweating buckets already. At the next train station... more bad news, the explosion in the train station has caused a cascade effect and all the trains are delayed in the entire system. DOH again. I run out to the street and see a cab that is big enough for all of us and our bags and grab it. I did not ask the cost or care at that point. The cab got us to the main train station in 10 minutes and we were able to catch our train.
The train ride was pleasant. Six hours in our own train cabin and we were in Ljubljana. We grabbed a cab to our apartment, dropped off our bags and started walking around the city. I must say, Ljubljana and Slovenia were a big hit with everyone from the beginning. The city is much smaller then Vienna (~300K people), but it is easy to navigate, friendly and clean. Most Slovenians can speak clear English, Slovenian and usually one other language. Slovenian is a lot log Czech, so we all new some of the language from when we went to Prague.
After dropping off our bags, we of course hit a park so the kids can run around. At the end of this journey, I will know where all the parks are in Europe!! After the park, we wandered around town, hit the famous bridge called Tromostovje, stopped to have a leaf fight in a square, and then grabbed some dinner.
Tomorrow we grab our rental car and hit the Slovenian lakes and country side.
