There is nothing like the smell of crisp, fresh asparagus, just picked in the fields.  It is the earthy smell of mother Earth stretching her fingers to the light, rubbing the soil out of her eyes, turning old life into new green life.  The perfect color of green tinged with purple, she must be a fashion diva to bless such a beautiful plant with these colors, inviting us to indulge.
The kids had never witnessed the unfurling of new asparagus and I just had to show them in person.  We marveled at the shoots emerged from the  earth, stood in the rain to enjoy the smell, the dark and worm  brewed smell I love from freshly turned soil.   This is one thing I miss living in an urban environment, the ability to touch, see and feel my food, to give gratitude to the earth and shake the hand of the person who grew my food.   And for this, I truly give thanks; to all of the farmers who till the soil and nurture the earth, who care for the plants and dedicate their lives to feeding others, Namaste.
