Mexico has shown us it's other face. We are 7467ft up in the mountains and freezing our bits off. Although it hasn't dropped below 20C during the day here it's a far cry from what we have been used to for the last three weeks.
However, despite my cold, San Cristobal has been a real pleasure to visit and be part of. It's a very colonial looking town with a great look about it. It's by far the most accommodating place we have visited so far on our trip and this is evident in the amount of other travelers staying here too. The place really comes alive at night, and even though I'm not known for my love of shopping, it's been great wandering around the streets, taking in all the wonderful local shops. I've been sticking to Mexican food as much as possible and have discovered a few gems along the way including Tlayudas and Enchiladas. I must say that we have both been impressed with the local cuisine. Most things have a kick or spicy twang to them but we are used to that now.
Our hostel is a family run place and unlike any other we have stayed at so far. We have use of the kitchen which is lovely and have a private room that costs us a fiver a night! We can't ask for more.
Since our arrival we have hooked up with six of our friends who we met back in Mazunte, on the beach, and so we have plenty of people to drink and eat with in the evenings. Last night we got smashed, for want of a better word, on ridiculous amounts of Mexican beer and Tequila. We ended up playing a very noisy game of poker until 3am at which point it was either leave or fall off our chairs and sleep on the floor. That's the most drunk we have been yet, honest mum! No sign of the umbrella lady yet Dave, but I'll keep on looking for her.
Today we started our Spanish course. It's three hours a day for one week and we have been told that we will be speaking good Spanish by the end of the week. That remains to be seen. Mish is great at learning new languages and I'm.....well, I'm trying my best. It's like being six again, learning the alphabet and counting from one to a hundred. It's good fun though as well as necessary if we want to get along with the local people, heading further into Central America.
So far we have traveled 970 km over land and that's just in one country. You don't realize how vast Mexico is until you start to travel around it. It still feels like there are many hidden treasures yet to discover here and we are really looking forward to finally visiting some Mayan ruins, one of the main reasons we decided to start our trip here. Viva Mexico!

Hill Billy
Awright there Wayne
If you think it's cold in mexico, Winter has said hello here in the UK. It's gone from sunbathing material last weekend to gloves and hat in under a week. I think it's a wise move learning the local lingo which I am sure will pay dividends and greatly enrich your experience of the Latin continent and the encounters with people you have
Aw the best
