Where I stayed
Westjet has changed. No longer a joke-quipping, customer-serving airline, this flight had video that shut off after one hour (lost satellite signal), six-dollar (lame) movies, six-dollar snack sandwiches, ten-dollar headphones. Wow. What a disappointment. No longer do you get offered a choice of entrees, a free MaiTai, and an orchid for the ladies.
The hotel and my room are fine. It's well-worn but OK for the price, located at the far end of Waikiki Beach but an easy walk into the centre of trinket town. I made a quick walk through the International Market for old-time-sake remembering the last time was with Susan and 3 small kids. It hasn't changed a bit -- maybe shrunken a bit, that's all
I bought a straw beach mat at the ABC Store (there are 2 every block; wish I owned that franchise) and headed for the beach which is only 1 block from my hotel. I found a coconut tree to lean against (checked if there were any bombs ready to fall first) and read. Wonder of wonders, no burn today.....the sky was broken cloud in the morning but it clouded over in the afternoon.
I just missed the APEC Meeting held in Honolulu; it wrapped up two days ago. The locals all complained about the traffic (a 20min drive to the airport took a tour driver 5hrs due to closed roads and forced turn-abouts by security). One fellow told me there was one demonstration at a plaza downtown which only got some news the next day. Networks didn't want to mention it the-day-of for fear the coverage would attrract demonstrators. Mmmm....it makes one wonder about the state of freedom, and the sacrifice over there in Pearl Harbor.
I go there tomorrow.
