Sadly, we have to say farewell to St Nikolas Hotel in Rhodes which must rank as one of our favourite stays ever.  Mariana was kind enough to drive us to the airport this morning.  Note all the parked cars along the front of the bars along the way.....young people here party until 6 or 7am.  Unfortunately, there isn't much police enforcement re drinking & driving so it's an issue here.

We left the airport at 6:50am and flew 45 minutes to Athens where we caught a flight for the 20 minute flight to Santorini.  Aegean Airlines didn't make much money on either of those flights.  Some entire rows were empty.

Santorini was half overcast and w-i-n-d-y.  The mercury likely didn't get over 16 degrees today.  Our hotel is in the main village of the island called Fira.  The town is draped on, and hangs a bit down, a high cliff which is the edge of a caldera.  I think it was about 1250BC when the island exploded creating three islands.  Some say the resulting tidal wave is what destroyed the Minoan civilization on Crete, some 70km south of us.  One of the small islands right in front of Fira is the present-day cinder cone of the volcano.  On Tuesday we'll take a boat over there for a tour of the island and the volcano.

Today we a day for just poking around the town streets, talking to shop-owners who always say "Hi" from their front porch.  These are very narrow whitewashed alleys peppered with doorways to homes, to small hotels, and souvenir shops.  Maybe the highlight of the day other than the location was lunch at Mama's Restaurant.  Mama greeted us and was the life of the room which was busy with guests from Europe, China and Dubai around us.  When she took our order, she asked mom: "So, what'll it be blondie?"  Ha!  The quality of the home cooking was dynamite good.

We're a bit bagged tonight so after a good soaker tub, it's off to the sack.
