So here we are in Sihanoukville, the beach paradise of Cambodia and the entrance route to the amazing Koh Rong island. The bus to Sihanoukville was a pretty terrifying experience, with every huge truck coming from the port heading at us at speed whilst I tried desperately to focus on Finding Nemo knowing it would all be worth it when we were on a beautiful pristine beach.

So to start with Sihanoukville has a mixed reputation, it has pretty much been taken over by the typical drunk grubby backpackers that have already ruined a million and one beaches across the world and from my brief experience here, Sihanoukville was full of drunk grubby backpackers.  Whilst I am sure on a lovely clear sunny day the beach is probably quite nice on a stormy rough grey rainy day it was not in the slightest bit appealing.  We knew in advance that we didn't want to stay in Sihanoukville for the above reasons and we planned to head straight to Koh Rong island, however as with all the best laid plans it just wasn’t to be. We stayed for 3 days waiting for the rain to stop and for the storm to pass but in a small town in the pouring rain there is only so long you can wait.  Sihanoukville did have one thing going for it, it had some pretty good restaurants and we spent everynight at Slumdog curry having some pretty awesome thali for just 2 each. Our hotel had fairly good food but they did let me down with the most pathetic excuse for beans on toast I have ever had!!

We knew that it was time to get out of town when one night we were watching the rain on the pool outside our window and we saw a huge frog jump into the pool.  After a good 5 minutes of swimming around it was pretty apparent that the dozy frog couldn’t get out so armed with a flip flop Tim got soaked through from the rain and undertook frog rescue and flip flopped the frog out of the pool to safety.

Time to admit defeat, the weather is not being kind to us so it is onward to the next destination, Kampot.  Almost unbelievably we managed to book ourselves on a minibus that was comfortable and the driver actually potentially had a driving licence and knew to slow down in bad weather, amazing!
