Brenu, 12/01

Miles Travelled: 19085

We've reached the Ghana coast at the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic. After such arid climates in Mali, Burkina Faso, and northern Ghana, we drove through a belt of lush rainforest to reach the coast. Palm trees, banana trees, abundant vegetation, and fresh pineapples were a welcome change from the dusty scrubland of the north. We're at a beach "resort" right on the ocean. The sand is great and the water is warm (you can actually go into the water without freezing, unlike back at home). It's not exactly the resorts of Tahiti, but our standards are a bit lower now than they were on our honeymoon. Now, we consider running water and a cold Coke to be luxurious.

We visited a community project supported by our tour company, which is a school in the community. We were told that we could help with construction on a new school building, but construction wasn't happening when we got there. So, we went to the primary school and visited with the faculty and students. The teachers then went into a meeting, and all the classrooms had kids and no teachers, so we just wandered in, saw what was on the board, and started teaching it! Nathan taught simple arithmetic to 8 year olds, and factoring and prime numbers to the older ones, while Anna taught how to use conjunctions to form compound sentences. It was a nice to do something other than just be a tourist, and the kids and teachers seemed to appreciate our visit.
