ending my day in Leicester Square with a bowl of lemon ice cream - listening to the accents, watching the people and loving the variety here. do i know where Leicester Square is? ummmm...nope. do i know how i got here from where i started? no - but i'm here!
today has been a day! the flight was decent - couldn't get too comfy (still aching from my graceful snowboarding lesson last weekend) but i did manage to sleep a bit. got a stamp in my passport and here i am! things here are really well labeled - it's awesome! the handy little "bobby" at the entrance to the underground (tube) gave me a map, some ticket information and a bit of "it's easy, off you go" and off i went! i must have walked half of london underground tonight. and everyone is just like me...looking around, asking questions, getting out their maps - even the locals!
i have managed to figure out the underground in no time...i love it! i found the hotel by happenstance...there aren't street signs here like there are in the states...the names are on the corner of the street buildings - but i am managing...i bought an A-Zed map and got checked in to my tiny little room with my one towel and no washcloth and took a nap! i just needed to stretch out my body and take a disco nap - however, going from the princess bed to a single bed makes for some adjustments - i realized that after i fell out of bed! good thing my head missed the night stand, or i could have had emergency #2 within 48 hours of lift off!
instead of sleeping the night away, i got up and decided to come down to Piccadilly Circus to check it out - again, took the underground and walked and walked and walked - but loved every minute of it! the people here are really nice - they say hello, make eye contact - it's awesome! i can see why they think americans are assholes. the first thing i saw when i came up from the tube was a mcdonald's sign...too funny...piccadilly circus is just that - a freaking circus! MY GOD! how does anyone get from point A to point B in a motorized vehicle? WOW! no left, no right, middle lane can go forward only if you are driving a green car on a tuesday...yikes! i just stood and watched in amazement...buses, cars, cabs, pedestrianss...after taking it in for a hot minute, i started walking...no agenda...i just know to look for the tunnel signs and i can get back to the hotel. i managed to walk the round-about without much trauma...the even label the roads for the pedestrians "look left" and "look right" are written on the ground to remind us they drive on the opposite side of the street. even looking left and right doesn't help!
as i look at the architecture here, i just keep singing songs from mary poppins - "step in time" - like dick van dyke should be sweeping chimneys and bouncing from roof to roof. More thumbnails ...
