We took the overnight bus through the Andes from Cusco to Copacabana crossing the border to Bolivia in the process. It was one of the many reasons I’m glad I’m not a yank, they had to pay US$135 for a tourist visa, unlucky, lol! Copacabana is on the edge of Lake Titicaca, that is one massive lake! We arrived and it was freezing, we went for lunch and I had a cup of tea to warm up. We ordered the local speciality, trucha (trout) from the lake with Andean salad (corn, potatoes, sweet potato, quinoa and yams. Within half an hour it was roasting and we chose to sit outside and sample the local cerveza, as you do. Our reason for visiting Copacabana was Isla del Sol (Sun Island), one of many islands on Lake Titicaca. The following day we took a ferry across to the island and walked the length from North to South in approximately 4 hours. The island was beautiful, but it came at a price
Having survived a bus strike, we’re now in La Paz. Monday night we came to the realisation that we will not be able to include Cuba on this trip :( so we went to a Cuban restaurant to ease the pain with mojitos. We had 2 main meals and several mojitos and beers for a total of less than 20 pounds! We love Bolivia, lol.
We spent Tuesday avoiding demonstrations almost on every corner of the city involving loads of dangerous fireworks, and riot police with guns in hand prepared, quite scary. Apparently the demonstrations were about everything and nothing and had been going on since the day before and continue to do so. It was a good time to go and do some retail and beauty therapy at Bolivian prices. We bought some alpaca goods and both got haircuts and Luke had his first cut-throat shave. He now feels like a man! lol
On Wednesday we went on an organised tour to Huayna Potosi, a snowcapped mountain a couple of hours drive from La Paz. We didn't climb right to the top but reached 5000 metres where we did some ice climbing. It was hard going but loads of fun!
Tonight we're on another overnight bus, (have to save on accommodation costs) to Uyuni to experience some illusions...
Hasta luego amigos
