We enjoyed a slower start to New Years Day and began 2017 with a gondola ride around our local canals. Was a very different view from the water and great to hear about some of the historic buildings in our area. Lots and lots of palaces, a tribute to the wealth of Venice in the 15th Century. Venice also has 5 leaning towers, 120 churches and 450 bridges (apparently we went across most of these!). Next we retraced some of the steps from the previous night to explore a new area of Castello in the light. We found an enormous Church in a local square - Campo S. Giovanni e Paulo. We then packed up a delicious picnic and headed back to the water front near Arsenale in search of quiet spot. We walked right to the end of the island where we were surprised to find a fair and also a beautiful park. We found another nice square to enjoy our daily coffee and hot chocolate before exploring the Arsenale area. This was the home of the Venetian Navy and was where the ships were originally built so another very different view of Venice. We also stumbled across Isola di San Pietro and another leaning tower (kids now feeling better about not going to Pisa). The shoppers then headed back to Rialto to explore a new area and look for a new dinner spot. We tried a "snack bar" which was highly entertaining. It seemed that this was a local spot full of locals, old and young, loudly greeting each other from all sides of the bar. To our amusement we counted 5 dogs in the little bar! A fun way to spend our last night in Venice.
