We awoke to a cold, grey, damp, drizzly morning. We hadn't been on the road very long when we passed a fuel station and noticed that the price of petrol was quite significantly lower here in Maine at $3.08 per gallon. That put Mel on a mission to find some at the $3.00 mark. After passing through a particularly muddy stretch of road works we spotted fuel at $3.049 per gallon and decided to fill up. Just less than an hour later, there it was at $2.999, and half an hour after that $2.799 - typical!!

The scenery seemed pretty much the same as it had from New York across Vermont and New Hampshire; lots of multi-shaded trees interspersed with small towns and fields, but nothing that really set it apart from those other states. Maybe the people who had raved to us about Maine in the fall had never been to north-western New York, Vermont or New Hampshire in autumn.

And then, after lunch and after passing through Bangor and Ellsworth it happened. The geography of the landscape changed and it became possible to see miles and miles of hills and mountains covered in these multi-coloured leaves. Absolutely stunning!

We arrived at Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island around 2pm, and after only a short drive came across a spectacular view of the bay where a huge cruise liner was moored in the midst of some of the smaller islands. The park encompasses an area of mountains, woodlands, glacially carved valleys and freshwater lakes.

Due to the time of year there is only one campground open in the park, Blackwoods campground. As with all National Park campgrounds it is quite basic with no electric or showers.

Once we had claimed our pitch we took a short drive through the town of Seal Harbor to Long Pond where we enjoyed the view over a donut and a cuppa. Then after driving around to the town of Northeast Harbor it was time to head back to the campground and get settled in for the evening.
