After a very reluctant pack up, we said goodbye to Mike & Mary Beth and promised to look them up if we're ever in Orlando. And then we took the A1A all the way up the coast to the outskirts of the greater Jacksonville area. It was another glorious day and being Sunday there were plenty of people out on the beaches, in the sea and on their boats on the intracoastal waterway. In order to avoid going anywhere near Jacksonville, we took the short ferry ride across the St John's River. The crossing is only about 5 minutes long, but whilst on board we got chatting to a guy called Rees and his son, who were out for the day in their beach buggy (veedub engine!).
Another 20 miles or so further north and we arrived at our campsite, Fort Clinch State Park at Fernandina Beach. It's the most northerly piece of Florida coast and also sits on the St Marys River. We insisted on a pitch on the beach side rather than the river side in order to avoid the biting things. Once set up we walked along the beach. It's a very natural environment, even more so than Flagler, with hundreds of different shells washed up on the shore. There are also dunes just behind the beach which are host to lots of different wildlife including bobcats. As it was early evening, the sun was beginning to set and we got some wonderful photographs as well as a few more shells to add to the collection!
