We awoke to a rather grey morning and after a quick pack-up were on the road before 9am. After stopping in Clarendon for ice we travelled south easterly down highway 287 towards Memphis (Texas). On the way there was a rest area and as we needed to use a phone we decided to stop. Top marks to Donley County for a superb facility. The toilets were spotless, the phone worked and there was even free wi-fi which we used to check our e-mail. They even had tornado shelters!

At Memphis we hooked off due east onto more minor roads. Our journey took us past more fields and farmland and it wasn't long before we crossed the state line into Oklahoma. We passed more fields, this time with a crop that we couldn't identify, until we saw a sign which told us that they were black-eyed peas. Oklahoma must be the world capital for black-eyed pea production. They're everywhere!

When we reached the city of Altus we made several stops for groceries, toiletries, bus spares and fuel and then carried on east through Snyder to Lawton where we passed the army airfield at Fort Sill and the Wichita Mountains A Grey Day

. After a fruitless search for a Dairy Queen we had to settle for a Sonic, where we decided on burgers rather than ice-cream, and they were the best burgers we've had on the trip so far.

Another 25-30 miles further east brought us to Duncan where there are a number of campgrounds around a group of lakes. At this point the map bore no relation to the roads we were offered, but we eventually found (we think), the site that we had selected from our book. It was very primitive and the "pitches" were on boggy grass right by the side of the lake where the water was very still and it was likely that there would be lots of mosquitoes. As there didn't appear to be a camp host or similar, we decided to park in the car park area which was tarmac and level and not so mosquito infested. Neil checked out the toilets and reported that we wouldn't be using them. Good job it's free!
