We left the site around 9.30 am and headed south, descending out of the forest into grassland dotted with ranches. A sizeable creature which had been steadily crossing the road, went bounding off into the grassland as we approached it. A coyote! We passed through several small towns and a lot of cyclists before arriving in Livingston around lunchtime. First stop was an auto spares shop to get something to plug the holes with to prevent any more water getting in and the onset of the dreaded rust! After that we found a nice local supermarket to get several days worth of groceries before finding a nice spot to have our lunch. Unfortunately it was right by a Dairy Queen and the temptation was too great! (By the way Neil's up to 32 stone and Mel's just over 27 stone!) Their "Extreme Chocolate" Blizzard ice cream is highly recommended. Pieces of delicious fudge brownie mixed in with the chocolate ice cream!!!! Definitely Mel's new favourite.
From Livingston our road south took us along the lush valley floor, mountains on either side, following the course of the Yellowstone River to, yep you've guessed it, Yellowstone National Park. Just a couple of miles into the park we crossed the state line from Montana into Wyoming, although there isn't actually a sign to let you know. The entrance fee into the park is $25 per car, or free with your annual pass! We've worked out that we've now had $175 worth of entrance fees out of our $80 pass. Bargain!!
Just a couple of miles further on we pulled into Mammoth Springs Campground where the lady ranger on duty allocated us a fantastic pitch, on the edge of the site looking across the valley towards the mountains. Absolutely stunning.
As we have such a nice view and it was such a pleasant evening, we decided to buy a box of firewood and cook our steaks on the grill over a fire. Unfortunately the firewood was full of sap and proved rather difficult to keep alight. Dinner took a little longer to cook than anticipated, but it was well worth waiting for!
