This morning we woke to a rather grey sky so we packed up some lunch and our waterproofs and set out on the 5 mile hike up to Avalanche Lake. We had wanted to go on a longer hike, but decided as Neil's back still wasn't 100% better that we should take things steady and not try to do too much too soon. By the time we got to the lake the sun was out and it was quite hot.

The scenery up by the lake is just breathtaking. There are waterfalls tumbling down the mountainsides which run off the Sperry Glacier, and in the shallow lake are fallen trees, slowing becoming covered in deposits of silt. The Petrified Forest of the future? There was a ranger stationed on the shores of the lake, a student who had gained a seasonal internship to work in the park for the summer season. She was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and we spent some time chatting to her. She told us that there were three bears that like to "hang out" around the lake and the top end of this trail Avalanche Lake © MFox 2008

. How exciting!

After enjoying our lunch in a beautiful setting with the sun shining, we headed back down the trail, stopping off at various places for photos of the creek and waterfalls. We reached the lower end of the trail just as the weather turned and we had some light rain. Back at the bus we cosied-in with hot drinks and biscuits again, (where's your tea-bitch when you need him?), hoping to see more deer wander through, but as the site is busier today, they were keeping a low profile.

The sun came back out late afternoon allowing us to cook and eat outside. We've decided to have an early night tonight so that we can get an early start in the morning. We'll be crossing the mountains on the Going To The Sun Road, so it will be slow going for us, especially as there are roadworks and delays on it at the moment.

There is a rather large group of campers on the sites close to us, who we believe to be Amish, and we settle into bed to the sound of hymn-singing. Not our cup of tea but quite beautiful and very surreal.
