After saying goodbye to Harold we headed north on Highway 64 towards the south rim of the Grand Canyon. What a scary road! Everyone is in such a hurry (maybe the canyon is disappearing) and it's only a single carriageway road so we saw some pretty scary driving. Mum, we know you were worried about us getting shot over here but we think you should be more worried about one of their idiot drivers taking us out. One guy tried really hard to do so today as he overtook us and somehow missed the car coming towards him (probably because Neil and the other guy managed to swerve out of the way).
Anyway, we arrived at the Grand Canyon in one piece and were completely overwhelmed by what we saw. It was pleasantly surprising for both of us that it was far more impressive than we thought it would be. The north rim and south rim are ten miles apart! And the north rim is over a thousand feet higher than the south rim. Quite spectacular! Although the sun was out where we were, across at the north side we could see heavy rain clouds and hear the thunder. The visibility was pretty good but could have been clearer if it weren't for a forest fire on the north side which had been started as a controlled burn, but had got out of hand and become a wildfire.
As the entrance fee into Grand Canyon National Park is $25 we are now $65 into our $80 pass, so we're doing rather well out of it.
We headed south from Grand Canyon through the Painted Desert, towards Flagstaff where we found another Coconino County Park, Fort Tuthill campground, but sadly this one wasn't as nice as Harold's, having Portaloos instead of proper toilets! Good job we've got our own little porta-potti as the Portaloos aren't very nice.
