Not able to spend another minute at the motel, we were up and out early and back on the trolley. We changed Downtown and took a bus across the Coronado Bridge to Coronado Island. As the bridge stands 200 ft high the views are pretty spectacular. Coronado is not strictly an island, but a peninsula connected to the mainland at its bottom end.
This is a "nice" area, no pink or aqua houses here! Lots of old buses too! It's most famous landmark is the Hotel Del Coronado, built in 1887 it has played host to many famous guests, including several US Presidents. It also featured in the film "Some Like It Hot" starring Marilyn Monroe.
The beaches are completely amazing. The sand is soft and golden and they're so long and so wide.
Coronado is also home to a US Naval Base, a US Naval Air Station and the Navy SEALS. There's also a very nice municipal golf course (Dad) and the fees are only $25 for 18 holes!!
After a few hours exploring Coronado, we made use of our Regional Daypasses and took a bus all the way down the peninsula to Imperial Beach. This is only 2 trolley stops away from the Mexican Border so approximately 5 miles. We then took the trolley back north to El Cajon and our motel. We worked out that today we had travelled almost the entire network of the San Diego Trolley system, except for the 2 stops near the border and 2 more north of our stop. Not bad for $5.
