Received a call first thing to say the bus wouldn't be ready until tomorrow! The fridge isn't working and the engine needs a smog check! Disappointed but not completely surprised.
However, the sun was out, the sky was blue and there were no clouds to be seen, so we decided to take the tram into San Diego for a spot of sightseeing.
For $5 each, you can purchase a Regional Daypass which allows unlimited travel on the trams (Trolley) and most of the buses. Bargain!
We took a different line in today and so avoided going through the rougher areas and instead saw some beautiful scenery of green hills and valleys. Our first stop was "Old Town" San Diego, which is actually a little misleading. It is in fact "Old Town Historic Park", and as the name suggests, it's a little Disney-stylee! The "traditional candy store" has stainless steel equipment, the general store sells beer in glass bottles and there's even a Sushi Bar. Things were obviously a lot better in the 1800's than we imagined!
Needless to say our visit there was a brief one. Back on the tram we headed for the "Gaslamp Quarter" in the hope that this wouldn't be as tacky as "Old Town". We actually stopped off in the harbour area first. Amazing what a difference a little sunshine makes, it's looks completely different today than it did a few days ago.
A now permanent fixture in the harbour is the USS Midway, an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, the lead ship of her class, and the first to be commissioned after the end of World War II. Active in the Vietnam War and in Operation Desert Storm, as of 2004 she is a museum ship.
After a wander around the harbour area we walked along to the Gaslamp Quarter. Very picturesque, lots of places to eat and a few examples of late Victorian American architecture.
Made full use of our Daypasses on the way back, stopping off at Ikea and a camping shop. Can't diappoint the maid, needed to bring back some mugs, a salad bowl and some cutlery just to add to the equipment mountain!
After an hour relaxing our tired feet back at the motel whilst having a beer, off out to get Chinese for dinner.
