So much for the lie-in! Neil had us up and out early as he had been lying awake since the early hours worrying about the roof canvas on the bus. Back to overcast skies, but Mel was taking no chances and applied the factor 30 to her rather pink face & neck. Although it wasn't HOT yesterday, the sun is obviously very strong over here.
Once Chris had put Neil's mind at rest over the roof canvas, off to Home Depot (that's Dee-poh) parent company of B & Q and quite obviously so. Same colour scheme, layout, products, etc. After getting some timber cut to size for wardrobe shelves we took it back to the now bursting hotel room. You name it, we've got it in there. God knows what the maids think. For starters there's the huge black bag that resembles a body bag. Then there's the fact that we have refused maid service for a couple of days, simply because we haven't needed the sheets or towels to be changed, but we're sure they're thinking there's more to it than that. Then of course, there's the small matter of us having a car one day, then walking everywhere the next with no car in sight.
Glad to report that the sun came out again today late morning and stayed with us for the rest of the day.
Chris and his wife Jenna took us out to dinner tonight which was really nice. They asked us how we were finding California and we relayed our experiences of feeling that we were speaking a foreign language. Just then, the waitress arrived to take the order and when Neil told her what he would like, right on cue we got "excuse me?"! Much to her embarrassment we all found it hilariously funny.
We also discussed our worry of stumbling into a bad area by accident. Jenna assured us that pink or aqua (that's aah-kwaa) coloured houses are a sure sign that you're somewhere you shouldn't be! Another topic of conversation was the immense size of everything and the fact that the word "small" does not exist here. Chris told us about a rather large size of soft drink you can get here - 64 ounces. That's 4 lb of liquid! Yes that's another challenge we're having. Everything's in yards. Or even worse, fractions of an inch. For example, the wood we bought today was 11/32 of an inch thick! What are these people on?
