Back in Bĕijīng, PingPing and I just had a late lunch in a Japanese fast-food outlet in the Xin Jiēkou Beidàjiē. Not being used to wearing sweaters directly on the naked skin, I felt somewhat itchy and uncomfortable. But I could either go straight to the hotel or have this lunch with PingPing first. I wanted to have lunch with her. And since it was so, the only suitable piece of clothing I had on me was this sweater. But at least it was dry.
After the lunch we set an appointment for tomorrow and she went home. And I finally returned to the hotel, had a good shower and changed into new and dry outfit. Then I had a pleasant rest until Maggie visited me in the evening. She expressed a wish to try some English tea with me. As neither of us knew where to get some in town, we decided to have it in my room. She even provided the glasses. The only thing we didn't have was milk and sugar. So we went out on Xin Jiēkou Beidàjiē and in one of those small self-service stores that abound in big Asian cities we found both. In the wake of the milk poisoning scare in China and subsequent world-wide outrage, I was a bit leery about the milk, not really wishing to turn into a toxic waste dump site during my trip. Well, dump person, as it were. But Maggie assured me I'd be OK, saying that she was buying "precisely that" milk brand and everything was fine. In any case, seeing her in person before me was a piece of indisputable evidence that there might be something to her claim. So we bought it all and spent some time drinking milk tea English way. Fully prepared for my trips, I always had a wire cooker on me. Just in case. You could never know when Maggie would ask for some milk tea.
When she left, I made a phone call to Juan. I expected to hear she was in Bĕijīng. But she was not. For some reason, she postponed her arrival until the next day. So I just promised to call her again at the same time tomorrow. After the phone call I cast a glance at the computer, but someone was on it already. Suddenly I didn't feel like waiting for it. Instead, I felt the length of the day in my bones and decided I just wanted to go to bed.
