January 10 - Cottlesloe Beach
We arrived in Perth around 2:30 pm, a little four and a half hours after we left Sydney. That's right, over four and a half hours! Australia really is a huge country. The total land mass is almost exactly the same as the continental United States.
We made our way from the Domestic Terminal of the airport to downtown Perth by public transport, getting into downtown Perth shortly before 4:00 pm. From our drop-off point, we walked a couple of blocks to the main Trans-Perth bus terminal where the sub-urban buses departed and arrived from. We boarded a bus headed for Fremantle, the largest suburb of Perth, which is directly on the coast just south-west of downtown Perth. We arrived at our destination just a little after 5:00 pm.
Our backpackers' hostel, Ocean Beach Backpackers, sits directly across the road from two of north-Fremantle's beaches. We had a lovely walk heading south towards the main beach. We didn't get into the water, as we felt it was getting a little too late to go back to get our swimming trucks which were still packed. We agreed (justified our decision?) that it was probably a little cool anyway given the brisk breeze coming off the ocean. We picked up some sandwiches and sat down to watch the sun set. Even though our watches said it was shortly after 7:00 pm, our bodies told us it was shortly after 10:00 pm, with Perth being three hours behind Sydney. With our early start getting to the airport, we were a little tired. Could we be getting old? Damn.
