Well have i got a story for you!

We get into town in the evening, settle in and go out for dinner where we feasted on a BBQ platter of meats including ribs, liver, intestine, beef, lamb, glands and chicken...all were real tasty and could actually go for some right now...but having pizza tonight so it can wait.

The next moring as im more of a "doer" than a "seeer" i flicked through my travel guide for a "what to do while in montevideo that involves doing" and i came up with the idea of renting a bike and riding along the track on the coast line.
This idea seemed to fly well with the rest of the clan so they decided to tag along.

During our navigation to the hostel that rented bikes we were mauled by mosquitos which montevido is apparently experiencing a "mosquito epidemic"...i mean you would wave your arm and you would hit at leat 30 mozzies!!!

Anyway when we reach the place after about half hour of walking, they only had three bikes left and we needed 9, so we head over to another place under the direction of this palce to find more bikes.....long story short we get attacked by more mozzies, the chad whips out the repelent and saves the day. We get to the place that supposedly rents bikes and find out it is a bike repair shop!
By now ere all fed up and head back to our hotel to get them to call the bikes in and to apply itchy bit soother. Once we get the the clan backs out of the ride so the chad decides to puch on and get this ride done.

I head back to the original destination and here starts the story.....

First of all there are 3 bikes to choose from. my feelings tell me i wanted to choose a certain bike so i chose it...it was basketless.
As i take it, the women tells me no no no, you cant take that one you have to take the other one...i say i want this, she says you take that! I want this...no you take that... So the chad takes the one she wants him to take!!!

After walking the bike about 10 minutes to a sweet spot on the coast, after consulting my map and compas i decide to get on and start the ride.

Within 50 metres the first hickup takes effect. The chain comes loose and i am forced to stop and repair the bike. (The phots tell the story)
Once repaired i push on and 100m down the track it happens again...off the bike, repar and remount.

Now im on the open track, wind in my hair and decide to open it up top speed along side the main road on a designated bike track.
As i stand up and build up speed the world seems to pass me by gracefully...until i hear a snap, crackle and eventually POP!
The chain comes OFF the bike so hit the brakes that DO NOT WORK, so still travelling at about 40km/hr as im thinking i should just let it slow down itself, the bike has one more surpise in store for me...and thats for the handlebars to twist out 90 degrees to the front tire...so now the bike comes to its own halt but not before throwing me over the front of it alongsie the main road where i slid leaving a nice graze mark on teh pavement, my knee and elbow.
I landed iright infront of this monther and child who just look at me with their mouths open.

By now the bike is batered, im bleeding and its only been about 20 minutes and 150m into the ride.
As usual chads prpared and the first aid kit (and camera) is out. After patching myself up i attempted to repair the busted up bike...and succeeded. I forgot to mention that no body stopped or offerd to help me when they saw the bike flip, me fly, or applying first aid to myself...the best i got was some dude offering to sell me rings as i was applying anticeptic to my knee.  Ahhhh good times.

Anyway, i wasnt goinf to let a piece of crap bike and blood ruin my day, so after all the repairs i continued on my journey down the coast.

The next 3 hours were full of starts and stps as the chain relentlesly kept coming off, so after lunch on the beach, the rest of the ride consisted of multiple walks and rides...which in the end wasnt too bad anyway. I got to see the city, see the beach, get some exercise in, use my first aid kit, carry out emergency repairs and bleed while getting it all on film just for you.

So that was my day. Wont forget it.

Later that night the clan head out for dinner and then hit an irish pub/club to get down some booze and punch out some moves on teh dance floor.

To wrap up, montevideo is just another city for me, but ive leartn my lesson...and that is to never trust Uraguian bicycles.
