Trivandrum

We arrived last night in Trivandrum (aka Thiruvananthapuram), a small city of about 800,000. We discovered a new snack last night called peanut masala: roasted peanuts, diced onion, cilantro, tomato, lime, and some unbelievable spices. Delicious. Today we went to the zoological gardens, which were very impressive. In other cities we have expressly avoided going to the zoos for fear of what kind of conditions we might find there, but the Lonely Planet high recommended this one, so we gave it a try. The animals all have large enclosures which (to the best of our knowledge) do a good job imitating their natural habitats. Among the most interesting things we saw were the mother tiger and her cubs during feeding time--a surprisingly orderly affair. From there we went to a park on the edge of town (and, as it turns out, the edge of the subcontinent as well).
We walked a little ways down the beach and found a family spinning rope out of palm fibers, which was really neat.
