It was yet another glorious day, so the short boat trip across the bay was very pleasant. Once ashore, it was easy to see how inmates hated this as a prison. The trouble is, it is too close to the big city across the bay. It was easy to imagine lying in a bunk in the night, and being able to hear the sounds of freedom in earshot, but so far out of reach. There was no death row there, but it must have felt like torture!
An audio tour is provided featuring narration by inmates and guards, and in the middle of the sequence about the riot of '46, when guards were shot dead and hand grenades were dropped from the skylights to quell the disturbance, we got talking to a group of tourists from Wales, having noticed an accent that to us was familiar. It turned out that, of all the hundreds of tourists we could have got talking to in the middle of cell block 'D' on that day, these people used to live across the street in Wales many years ago from a very good Welsh friend of ours who now lives in Melbourne where we live. Now tell me, in all honesty, what are the chances of that?
