Flag of Canada  , British Columbia,
Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Kamloops, British Columbia is not only my hometown it is also the hometown of famed NHL player Mark the "Recchin' Ball" Recchi, Dale Wallace, keyboardist from the award winning country  band Emerson Drive and the current residence of Lesra Martin, the lawyer who helped Rubin "The Hurricane" Carter's get released from prison. During your visit the be sure to check out the Kamloopa Pow Wow, watch the Adam’s River Salmon Run, enter the Sun PeaksSlush Cup and drive to the Center of the Universe.

Kamloopa Pow Wow
The name Kamloops was derived from the Secwepemc word Tk’emlups meaning meeting of the rivers (the city is located where the North Thompson meets the South Thompson). Every year on the August long weekend, the Tk’emlups Indian Band hosts one of the largest celebrations of First Nations culture and heritage in Western Canada.  This vibrant display of storytelling and song complete with traditional costumes, dance and drumming competition is a must see.

Adam’s River Salmon Run
Every fall, millions of Sockeye Salmon make an obstacle-filled journey of 400 kilometers against the current to return to the place they were born for one purpose – to reproduce then die.  The 2010 Salmon Run is expected to attract an estimated 15 million fish that will battle the Fraser and Thompson Rivers on their way to the Adams River to spawn.  Thousands of people from all over the world show up at Roderick Haig-Brown Park in the North Shuswap every year to witness this remarkable event.

Slush Cup
This family-friendly year-round resort, located 45-minutes from Kamloops, is a great place for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, hiking, golfing and mountain biking. Sun Peaks also host events such as the Winter Festival of Wine, the Velocity Challenge Speed Skiing Competition and my personal favorite the Slush Cup.  Every spring on closing weekend skiers and boarders attempt to make it across a pool of water often ending with a splash and getting dragged out by divers.

Center of the Universe
Monks believe that the Center of the Universe is an area where power lines intersect and one can find peace, or get centered, hence the name.   In 1980, a man dressed in white robes arrived at Vidette Lake in Deadman Valley claiming to have found the Center of the Universe.  The apprentice monk had been sent there by his master teacher from San Fransisco who had pointed to a location on a map that he had never seen claiming it to be the spot.  The apprentice conducted a series of tests which produced positive results thus clearing the way for his Master Teacher to visit the area, along with an entourage of followers, to conduct their own tests.  The results were again positive and the Master Teacher proclaimed the top of a grassy knoll overlooking the valley and Vidette Lake to be the real deal. Ray and Ruth Stad own the Vidette Lake Resort where people can book tours to the Center of the Universe as well as guided tours of the abandoned Vidette Lake gold mine, the Ghost Resort and the magnificent Deadman Falls.
