The ferry ride was rocky, so we spent outside the ship most of the time. Vera's face was pretty white. The car trip from the harbor to the hotel took more time than one can imagine. We understood it is not allowed to drive in Old Town of Tallinn even if the hotel is over there. So, we had a race with the touristic horse rides and we were competing against the herds of tourists in those narrow cobbled streets. Finally after few penetration intentions we had to give up and we left our car few blocks from the hotel and walked there to ask how we can get this short 200 meters trip by car to the hotel legally. They answered that if we want to follow the law we almost need to drive to Tartu and back to drive the legal route. We decided to break the law just a bit and drive straight these narrow cobbled streets to the hotel court yard. There will be still more complains about the Estonian road system later. And this is about the only thing I have to complain in this pretty, dynamic and interesting small country.
After the first stress of the trip and after settling down in the cosy room in Wana Viru hotel we were ready to walk around the old town and to admire the beauty of this Unesco World Heritage site - Tallinn Old Town.
The old town is very unique place in Europe, maybe the best remained medieval town in this continent. At least now the whole place looked and felt like a medieval theme park. Everywhere were some people dressed like in medieval times, music groups performing medieval music and so on. The atmosphere is undescribable. Sometimes the idyl is broken by herds of Finnish drunken tourists though which I shame enormously. Some people should not be allowed to own travel documents. Or maybe the old medieval punishment methods should be taken in use again. There is a nice town square where those bad behaving people could be prepared with tar and feathers. But in most cases they are so drunk they would just think it is just one more nice accident on their adventure in Tallinn. And back home they would be proud of that.
This evening we also tried to contact few HC (www.hospitalityclub.org) members without a result. They were either in a different city or in different country. So, we had nice dinner in an Austrian type of beer restaurant and walked our feet off around the medieval center. More thumbnails ...
