After the shock of Playa del Carmen we are now went with a collectivo (its a van/taxi which you join with other people and it leaves when the its full and stopps where you request) two hours south to tulum.
Tolum is famous for the ruins and the beach.
So after we jumped out of the collectivo we first tried to walk the 3 km to the beach but regarding the 35 C we decided to take a taxi (mafia style here, they charge you more to the beach as a taxi would cost in germany for the same distance).
The owner of a place called "papaya village" recommended his place (sure ;-) so we had a look there and liked it very much. (not the price actually but the atmosphere). However the camanas are about 20 USD and have a sandfloor with lots of stuff crawling around
marias confidence.
The night horrible, the bed was very small and there was not the slightest breeze under the mosquito net. (which was absolutely neccessary, the would have eaten us alive). And in the dark we were not to eager to walk to the jungle to the bathroom so maria had to suffer until sunrise to go to the toilet and all spiders were gone by then. (not really we didn't see spiders here at all, just a big crab scared us by coming out from under the backpack).
Then we went the way to the runis and checked some other cabanas but the price is pretty much the same at all places and they rather have no guests then renting them for cheaper.
On the way to the runis we met a canadian girl and a french guy and they promised us a surprise there. The place was like disney world. Close to a 1000 tourists from playa del carmen or some other resorts were there with us. The only nice thing was we did not have to pay the 5 dollars for the entrance because we managed to look touristy enough to join a american guided tour until we were in
So the guidebook says go in the morning and thats abolutely true.
It isn't too much fun to get pushed of the cliff just because everyone wants to take a picture from this temple. It reminded me of "Lemmings" if there wouldn't have been a rope to stop people of getting to close to the cliff.
So actually we didn't really enjoyed the ruins. But back at Papaya Cabanas we met the frenchmen (Francois) and the canadian girl (Brandy) again and accompanied them to Tulum town because francois didnt want to stay another day on the beach.
After we arrived at his guesthouse "Weary Traveler" we understood him. The place is great to meet people, nice athmosphere, free water, free internet, you can cook here .... All togeather a nice place to be and you don't feel like getting overcharged all the time.
We had a great party there last night with lots of beer, met people
from all over the world and went later at the beach for a nightswim.

a giant gekko ?
. To make things worse we met a german guy who showed us an image of a "Tarantel / Tarantula" spider which was in his bathroom. We are glad we had no bathroom ;-), but it didn't helped marias confidence.
