Anyway, Full-on is the word i would use for this place, it doesn't sleep and it certainly stops for no man especially the mopeds who buzz around the place like a swarm of wasps. Thousands of them and there is absolutely no chance we're riding a bike in this city!
We arrived after a boat/bus journey from Phu Quoc via Rach Gia - a potentially heavy journey but surprisingly not thankfully. The obligatory dubbed Chinese fighting films were our entertainment for 6 hours (they play these on every mode of transport in Vietnam no matter what the time or if there are children present) and they are often quite entertaining for 10 minutes but whenever we have a long journey I just sit back and ipod it all the way, usually nodding off if I'm lucky
It was shame we didn't stop for 2 days at the Mekong Delta but time was running out as our flight back to Bangkok was on the 8th March and we had other places to get to in the interim so sadly we had to skip it and the gorgeous floating market the area is famous for. Have to hit it up next time I guess especially now Air Asia do rock bottom deals (170 quid one way to Kuala Lumpa!) to South East Asia destinations from London!
This was however a very fleeting first visit to Saigon as we plan on heading up the coast to Hoi An, we met up with Don who had finally sorted out his Nam visa in Cambodia who had been there a good 6 days whilst we were in Phu Quoc so knew his way around a little and drank the afternoon away in backpacker central Pham Ngu Lao (where we also stayed), watching the world fly by.
Visited the really hectic Ben Thanh Market at peak time (lunch) which has an absolutely immense amount of counterfeit goods on sale, Bangkok hasn't got nish on this place trust me. Ended up buying a very good (well the packaging was extremely good) 100ml bottle of Bulgari Aqua aftershave, The fragrance lasted approximately 1 hour but was as near as damn it smell wise to the 80 quid original I have to say. Sofie bought some Burberry perfume (scent lasting about 5 minutes longer than mine) and some other cosmetics I forget. You could go a bit mad in this place but we were restraint as the ever looming presence of the dreaded travel budget keeps you from being stupid..sometimes.
So now we have a lovely 17 hour journey up the coast to Hoi An on what is know as a soft sleeper, should be interesting!
