Braving the city buses this morning, we traveled to the best zoo in Europe. And saw a koala bear from San Diego. Not unlike San Diego, this zoo is on a hill. Seems everything here in Edinburgh is on a hill. Can't image what this place would be like in the summer--we had the zoo mainly to ourselves (and 6 other people) and it was quite well done.

Their claim to fame is a kick ass penguin exhibit--which it does (just wait for the photos!); most of the enclosures still allow you to get real close to the animals--the otters and red panda and lemurs (another great photo op!) all seem quite used to people and not shy about running around for you. Couldn't help but think the States could never get away with anything like this because some jerk would jump over the barrier and ruin it for everyone.

Since the weather has been amazingly clear, we did yet another touristy thing and climbed Calton hill to watch the sunset (please see note above about the hills) 01 - My Name is Hank the Penguin

. Lots of monuments, and excellent views. Then down the hill to see (drum roll please) Harry Potter! Too bad the movie, to quote our pub waiter, was (insert Scottish brogue here) "rrrubbish!" Kind of took the novelty off of seeing the movie in Ms. Rowling's home town, but it sounded like a good idea at the time.

Dinner at a recommended basement pub (thanks, Sam), appropriately called "The Basement" made up for the movie. Ben had the "best steak of his life" (mmmm, garlic butter) and I had some great salmon. And they didn't even throw me out of the place when I asked for a whisky and Sprite to drink.

Tomorrow we're off to St Andrews to watch Tiger Woods miss the cut.

[Editor's Note: For those wondering, we've been connecting in two nice internet cafes here in Edinburgh. Each charges £2/hour, which if you go to xe.com you'll see is not much of a bargain. But, it seems to be the going rate. One of the cafes will let us upload photos, but that's not the one we're at right now. It's on the Royal Mile, which is another hill from here, so the photos will have to wait until later. We're transferring the photos to CD-ROM in the local Kodak shop at their super-easy-dummy-proof kiosk that lets you view and rotate photos directly from the flash card before burning onto their CD. -BT]

What Weather!
What great pics, once again. We're so enjoying your adventures, between the posts and the pics, feel like we're right there. Finally a cloudy day here, how about that! Love all your pic captions. Too bad about Harry, though all the reviewers, or at least the bank seems to love it. Lots of moolah there once again. I'm making a turkey for Thanks. so you can have the leftovers on Friday. Smashed potatoes, stuffing, your rolls and the bird. I'll save a drumstick for you Caiti.Love to you both, Mom and Dad Oh, and apple pie too.
