Where I stayed
Pedras De Afilar
Montevideo (pronounced Monte-vid-ayo)
It was only a 6 hour bus ride to get here so we caught it in the day time and the bus had wi-fi on it, so that was pretty handy! As we were coming in my first thoughts were, just another big city, museums, shopping malls etc. We were staying close to the centre of the old city. On our way in the taxi to our hostel we saw many horses and carriages around the city streets which looked odd with all the traffic, but they were the garbage collectors, later we found out that they're not hired by the government as such but they do receive an allowance and they go through the garbage to take things to the recycling plant for money also and sometimes dinner comes from the garbage for them… most of them live on the border of the city in shacks.
Anyway so we arrived at our hostel expecting the worst (from the review on the web) and that’s exactly what we got, ha ha, it was this really old building that was almost falling apart inside n out, but the owners gave it some character with bright artistic decorations and paint and the layout was kinda cool with 3 levels with spiral stairs and a big open air ceiling. We only stayed a few days and checked out the city, it had some nice boulevards with people jogging and some swimming in the beach. The older part of the city was really nice with the buildings and museums everywhere, some good markets too of course! I think I’m over markets though… I have seen every kind possible!! But we did enjoy our few days here checking out the city.
Our last night the hostel had an asado (bbq) right out on the street, everyone bought some meat to share which is a tradition and we had a great feed n met some good people. I have to say our first impressions of the hostel left much to be desired but just being there for 2 nights and meeting the owners, they really left a lasting impression and the experience of a local home bbq was great! We left their place smiling.
