We are anchored at 8 am at Sorrento, Italy - It's Friday and as we finally awake at 9am find we are docked. Finally dragged ourselves out of our beds, showered and Carol headed for breakfast- I am not even hungry this morning. She breakfasted with a crew gal, Natalie, that we like, and sorry I missed that, but, really over ate last night - and the dancing didn't burn it off! Down about 11 to walk around a bit and discovered that it is lightly raining and the air smells smoky. A sandwich at the Waves and back to get ready for todays tour to Sorrento. So far all our tours have left in the early morn but today we leave at 1:10. This was the first morning we have had the chance to sleep in! Sorrento is 31 miles from Naples and perched on 500 ft cliffs with what looks like caves dug at the bottom, sea level, and we are guessing stairs in them to get supplies and such to the top.We later heard that they were also instrumental in staving off pirates! Artist such as Byron, Shelley, Goethe, Verdi and Wagner have lived here. The Isle of Capri is 3 miles out to sea from us, again. Pompeii is very near but just after we arrived in Sorrento it started raining enough that visibility was very low and we could not see it! This area has been inhabited since the Stone age - Phoenicians, followed by Greeks and then into Roman hands in 326 BC!! Our guide, Roberta, was very hard to understand, and with the rain this was one of our least enjoyed days, but still a good day. We first toured a shop where inlaid wood tables and furniture were made and watched as the artist explained how it was done, then stood outside in the light rain for a long time waiting for our bus. It took us through the narrow and winding streets, not as narrow as yesterday but close and we did have to maneuver around a few cars and buses. A long and winding drive up into the hills, which would have been beautiful had it not been raining. At last back to the town bus lot where we walked back down to the pier and onto a tender for home! Some of the guys put open umbrellas over the open exits to keep the rain off of all of us. We were glad to be back tonight. Dinner in the Tapas Room for buffet and looks like an early night for us- Still raining so some of the things on the pool deck are probably cancelled.
