Drove out to McKittrick Canyon Visitor Center and did the 6.8 mile hike. This hike was out and back to the Pratt Cabin and the Grotto. Pratt had heard about the "most beautiful spot in Texas" and checked it out for himself. After a visit, he purchased the canyon and surrounding areas and later built the rock house. This house was built by one stone mason, two cowboys and a resident architect/engineer. The unusual feature was the stone roof.
