Stayed most of my nights in this area at a place called Viareggio. As stated in the Pisa entry, the place was chockers this long weekend and it was a bit of a party atmosphere. Long coastline of sandy beach here, with the fantastic backdrop of the Apuane Alps, but unfortunately the Italians don't really know how to run a beach. They have set up these things called "Bagnos" which are kinda like beach clubs. You buy a membership and get to use their facilities for the summer - which are umbrellas, beach chairs, toilets, storage, and a bar. Sounds pretty good, but unfortunately the beach chairs and umbrellas are ALL OVER the beach. You almost can't find a spare square metre. It kind of ruins the atmosphere of a beach, and when I set my towel down on a spare piece of sand, some dude rocked up and said "this beach isn't free" to my disgust and told me to go elsewhere. Beaches are FREE, that's the whole point, it's state land, not privately owned (or at least i goddamn hope that's the case). Anyway so that pissed me off.

Righto, so next stop Croatia!
