Another place I stopped off at on my few days driving around NW Tuscany was Carrara - the site of brilliantly white marble mountains overlooking a sandy beach coastline and in front of a mountain range called the Apuane Alps. The white mountains seriously look incredible, almost like snow, the photos don't do it justice, but I think it is summed up by my initial shock as I turned a corner in the Fiat Panda - I exclaimed "holy shit that looks AWESOME" to myself. Michelangelo used marble from these mountains for most of his sculptures, which is definitely this town's claim to fame. Not much else in the town, so I drove right up to the marble, took a few piccies, and headed back to the coast.
