Arrived in Naxos not knowing anything about it, but we were pleasantly surprised to learn that a great little hotel on a beach called Agios Prokopios (how Greek does that sound?!) with a swimming pool, was offering us beds for 10 euro a pop. Beauty. This beach is allegedly the best beach on Naxos - and FINALLY we encountered SAND in greece (as opposed to pebbles and rocks). I have now seen a decent beach in Europe, and will endeavour not to pay out their beaches too much now!
Managed to hire a little Chevy hatchback the next day and drive all around the island, finding a whole heap of cool little places along the way. Everything looks really really old here, as it did back in Athens - the landscapes here in Greece are quite different to everywhere else I've been. We saw marble quarries (apparently the Venus de Milo used marble from Naxos), a crap cave, some beautiful coastlines, a statue of Apollo that wasn't even finished or upright, and another SAND beach. Quality. The Greek music on the car radio wasn't all that great, but that was pretty much the lowlight of the day, aside from a pear-shaped taxi driver who was a true asshole to us, insulting us to our face in Greek and treating us like idiots. Onwards to Paros!
