Santorini, probably one of the prettiest greek islands, but also one of the most touristy, was our first stop of our 10-day island hop. It was just that - really nice, with it's blindingly white and blue houses, and ocean and volcano crater views. Few too many loud and annoying Americans though! We did a great 3 hour walk from the main town, Fira, around to a place called Oia which is renowned for it's sunsets. The walk was better than the sunset. But yeah, the island is basically a volcano, with the middle of the crater sunken into the sea, showing the cone as a small island. Black "sand" beaches (really rocks) and all that.

Got to know a few cafe owners here - one dude called Edi and another called Yani. Greek cafe owners seem to be the friendliest guys in the world, they're great. Had some quality gyros here. Cam had 4 in a day. They put chips in their gyros wraps, it's delicious and we think it should be copied back home at Souvlaki King 01 Our hotel :)

. Their gyros' are also a little smaller than at home, perfect snack size, not like the overwhelming meal-and-a-half you tend to get in melb town.

Originally the plan had been for us to go to Santorini, Ios and Mykonos. But after Santorini, we discovered something very important. Greek Islands are generally the places where americans and northern europeans go for a weeklong holiday, as opposed to a place where backpacker-types go. There are tons of clubs, but very few pubs. Pubs are pretty much our scene, and so Mykonos (with it's gay nudist beaches and techno music on every beach) and Ios (allegedly full of poms just there to get totally wasted) were crossed off our list, and Naxos and Paros added to it.

We watched the Da Vinci Code movie in Santorini too, and all quite enjoyed it. Nothing brilliant, but enjoyable. I thought Tom Hanks was very good. One minor problem was that none of us speak French or Greek, and all Jean Reno and the other cop's lines were in French with Greek subtitles, leading to very little understanding.
